Voting

A student of mine recently wrote the following: "Democracy is important, because it lets us buy whatever we want."

I kind of hope that she gets lost on the way to her polling place. But the rest of you -- it's ELECTION DAY! Go cast your vote!

To recognize the importance of this right and responsibility, I have created a brief blog "ballot." You will notice four very crucial questions on the right-hand side of the website. Please consider your votes carefully and click on your desired positions. Our society depends on your participation.

UPDATE 5:15 p.m. It's a tight race for vanilla-flavored toothpaste and candy-as-veggies. Stay tuned for more!

UPDATE 6:25 p.m. Veggie purists take the lead! Toothpaste race too close to call.

UPDATE 9:45 p.m. Olivia Newton John is looking for supporters! Toothpaste race is still the one to watch.

UPDATE 10:05 p.m. The Mint Only! vote is breaking away.

UPDATE 9:30 a.m. The polls will be open until midnight tonight (just to keep the election fever going one more day). Get your friends to vote! Be a good American!

Another win for de Mint. Sigh.

Clearly, Vanilla didn't spend 140 billion on advertising. Thank goodness. Why would I want to be kissed by someone who has "vanilla-y fresh breath"? And, a sugar snap pea is the only thing that can dress up like candy for Halloween.

My kids love that vanilla toothpaste. They say it tastes like cupcakes. I, however, get queasy at the thought. We're a divided household.

I think the task is not to dress up the veggie like candy, but to make the candy seem more like a veggie. Those coconut ones are close -- isn't a coconut a fruit? But what, I wonder, is nougat (sp.)? Perhaps Phthor Quiddity can help us out by explaining that one.

Actual question upon receiving my first degree: "Okay [Phthor], now you can tell me, is mayonnaise a liquid or a solid?" Right answer: colloid.

I think nougat might be a similar case. Between the unfolded proteins from the egg whites, polysaccharides from nuts and maybe the eggs, and sugar added to modify the proteins and prevent phase separation (not to mention the protein modifications due to glycation aka caramelization), it's looking pretty colloid-y to me. Even if it isn't I am thinking it would be cool to look at under one of our microscopes. [dork dork dork]

I would be a little careful about vanilla in toothpaste. (Prepare for a really weird zig-zag in logic!) You ever try to get a German to drink a root beer? They rilly rilly hate it! It has something to do with them having anise-flavored toothpaste over there... tastes too much like our root beer. It would be a shame if one got conditioned to never swallow anything vanilla flavored.

Also, I have nothing constructive to say about coconuts.
